I think that the hardest part of not having kids at home is figuring out how to fill that daily void. For so many years, life revolved around kids’ schedules, kids’ school, in general kids’ lives that it’s hard to figure out me again.

Since the boys are so close in age, friends used to kid that it seemed like I was pregnant for a very long time. Hard to remember they would say, when you weren’t pregnant. I understand what they meant now. Hard to remember when I wasn’t a mom. I love being a mom. I will always be a mom but now I have “me” time back so I need to dig deep and find my happy place. Things I enjoy doing that aren’t necessarily mom related.

In this quest, I am trying different things seeing what sticks. One thing that has fallen by the wayside in recent times has been this blog which I started over a decade ago when we moved here. I enjoy writing and promised myself for the new year that I would try my best to post to it every day.

Some days will be witty and well thought out, other days may be more stream if consciousness and I’m sure some will be purely because I have to write something, kind of like self imposed homework. Whatever the day’s inspiration may be, the overarching reason is that I enjoy it, I think I’m fairly decent at it and it makes me happy. Hopefully those reading it will enjoy it too. Since I also like taking pictures and feel I haven’t been doing enough of that either lately, you’ll see a neat photo to go along with the words I write. These were taken the other morning on my way back from my sunrise Rotary meeting. Everything was frosty and beautiful in the drive up the hill.

I am also starting an online Harvard open class course in my “spare” time. Maybe that will be another day’s post.

It is definitely difficult to get everyone in the same place at the same time these days. Gone are the days when I plopped the boys in their Sunday best down for Christmas pictures. In the last few years, I actually had to let go of the Christmas card idea since getting a picture with everyone (or at least all the boys) that wasn’t from the summer or graduation has been damn near impossible.  Since every year, I stare longingly at all the wonderful family photos that everyone posts, on Christmas Eve after mass I attempted to get a family picture. If nothing else, it’s good for some laughs. Hope your Christmas was merry and bright and you got to share it with those you love and cherish. After all, that’s what matters, the pictures will eventually come…..

The sunlight coming through the window in the late afternoon when I was cutting the tips off of the green beans for dinner caused me to grab the camera and take some pictures of things on the counter that my photography teacher would (hopefully) have been happy to see for a class assignment.

Try as I might I cannot figure out why over the past several nights I have woken at almost the exact same time 2:15 and been unable to go back to sleep. The first time I blamed caffeine as the culprit but night before last, no caffeine in the picture – I didn’t even have two cups of coffee in the morning! I’m blaming it on hormones I guess since sleep problems do not seem to plague our male counterparts. As I lay in bed tossing and turning, begging for sleep to come alongside me, my husband is sound asleep. It is very frustrating, almost as bad as the sober person around a bunch of drunk folks who are acting incredibly stupid.

After it became apparent that I was definitely, try as I might, not going back to sleep and dawn was now approaching I figured I would get up. I got up, made a crumb cake, made the coffee and then went out for a run (or run/walk as may be more appropriate).  There wasn’t a car out on the road while I was out. Here are some pictures from the morning yesterday

Here’s a sunset picture Tyler took and posted on his blog a couple weeks ago.

Here’s a sunset picture I took today in Rutland. Same sun, totally different look.
