Despite the fact that spring arrives this week, winter is hanging on tight here and not letting go. In fact, we woke to a winter storm warning for 9-16 inches of snow starting tonight. Mind you, if you travel into town, there isn’t a speck of snow on the ground, this is all elevation snow, although according to the weather service, that is about to change for a lot of people with the impending storm. We laughed when we went into town and pallets of mulch and displays of bulbs are everywhere. We have no use for them yet. You folks posted the cute pictures of crocuses peeking from the soil, not so much where we are located, unless they are very strong and very tall crocuses and can get through feet of snow.
Here are some pictures that I took last weekend of the snow around the house. Things haven’t changed much in a week and since it’s only 3 degrees here this morning, I doubt anything will be melting today.

This afternoon, I got up to take a break from working and walked by a west facing window. It was late afternoon, and the view of the sunlight (which we have not seen much of in these parts recently) shimmering snow, clouds and shadows just painted a beautiful picture that I felt compelled to share. I love it when nature just stops you dead in your tracks and you have to take a deep breath and appreciate how small and inconsequential you really are in this great universe. This afternoon, at this moment, was one of those times. Simply breathtaking in person, I hope that you might have been somewhere where you saw something just as nice today. If not, enjoy this picture.

From before first light this morning, the snow has been falling, fast and furious. At points today, a look out the window gave one glimpses of some almost blizzard-like winds and snow with very little visibility. By the time I ventured out at 3 to get kids (yes they had school today) we had about 8 inches on the ground here. The town plow truck had been by several times, each time flinging snow to the sides of the road.
I definitely needed my good ol’ Sorel boots to wander out into the yard today.
Especially when it was looking like this outside this afternoon.
So odd, how in just a few miles and a few less feet in elevation, it is a completely different world. BTW, as I type this, it is still snowing here.
I have a collection of Calvin and Hobbes books that sit on the bookshelf. I remember how disappointed I was when Bill Watterson announced that he would no longer be drawing the strip. The comic of a little boy and his imaginary tiger bring us back to the wonder and imagination of childhood with adult appeal thrown in for good measure. There is something particularly amusing to me about his snowman related strips. I came across this one today on GoComics.com and needed to share.
Heh, heh, heh — come on, haven’t you felt like this?
We were given the gift of snow over the Christmas holiday. First with a white Christmas and then with about two feet of snow in total. It allowed for lots of playing in the snow by all and some beautiful scenery for those who prefer to view their snow from the warmth of the wood stove. We had the opportunity to visit with some family (my sister and her family were not feeling well so we didn’t get to see them). We had my dear friend from college and her family come to stay with us and we celebrated two birthdays — my mom’s birthday and my friend Ellen’s son Tom’s birthday.
We had our annual New Year’s Eve party where lots of dear friends and family gathered to celebrate the beginning of another year. Lots of fun was had by all. I know that we had a good time hosting and enjoyed the time with everyone.
My brother made a couple trays of antipasto for the party. We haven’t had antipasto in the T’s house since my dad passed away. It was “his” thing and well it just didn’t seem right having it without him. After 11 years, I finally have come to terms with that and the “tradition” has returned. Bill put together one very nice looking antipasto — Daddy would have been proud! Here are the shots as it was being created.
Warmest wishes to all for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. May you and your families be blessed with good things.

For those you who asked, here are pictures of the snow from yesterday. It is snowing again as I type, giving us a rather hellacious ride back from Burlington this evening–mostly due to the fact that some people really have no idea how to drive (with or without snow). And yes, I put the picture of Tom and I in there because, well dammit — I just can and it’s almost Christmas Eve.
First, congratulations since you and I are still here….no end of the world. A great relief to one of my children since he has been patiently counting down the days until Christmas and he gets his phone and the world ending would have just totally ruined his plans.
Second — white Christmas! Woke up this morning to snow and it is still snowing. Since there is no rain in the forecast between now and Christmas I think that it is safe to assume that our Christmas will be white– the way it is supposed to be here in Vermont.
Third — I get to spend the afternoon with some dear friends at a cookie swap, an annual tradition since before I even moved here. My friend was always kind enough to schedule it when we were up in Vermont so we could share in the festivities and I love her for it. Now, it’s a simple walk from my kitchen to hers.
Shortly I am off to the Farmer’s market with my favorite guy. Good stuff.
Hope your Saturday is wonderful!
Just a little snow….a dusting of sorts is what we have been waking up to the past few mornings. Crisp, chilly air and a little snow. The sounds of the town plow truck as it makes its way up the hill to drop some sand. The symmetrical strips of sand that cover the roadway.
Tomorrow the calendar flips to December… the month of winter and holidays–and maybe snow?

Hard to believe there is such a stark difference.
Seedlings are growing indoors. I have blossoms on my pea plants. Raspberry bushes that we planted indoors are throwing shoots up like mad, yearning to be put in the ground and spread out.
Daffodils are up in the full bloom at the bottom of the hill where the grass is green.
This morning, the Fed Ex guy and I were talking when he dropped off a package at our house and he told me that a friend in Killington sent him pictures of snow from last night….. 8 1/2 inches fell on the guy’s car and he saw the pictures (as my TJ would say “pictures or it didn’t happen”) to confirm it. There is more snow forecast for tonight in the higher elevations.
Snow, spring, seedlings, showers, flowers, sunshine — as they would say on a favorite children’s show “one of these things just doesn’t belong“
